Thinking You Can’t

Hey, it's Dustin from Zero Services LLC. You might know me as the guy who shows up for leaky faucets, full remodels, or 2 a.m. emergencies in St. Lucie, Palm Beach, or Okeechobee County. But even after 20+ years in the business as a handyman and building this family-owned operation, self-doubt still sneaks in. That inner voice hits me with:

  • "What if the client hates this job?"

  • "Am I really worth these rates?"

  • "Everyone else has it together—why am I still second-guessing big projects?"

If you're a tradesperson, small business owner, or just grinding through life, you've probably heard it too. For me, it flares up when least expected, especially quoting major work or thinking about growth. It's common—lots of us in the trades battle imposter syndrome, especially comparing our real days to polished social media feeds. The key? Doubt doesn't mean you're incapable. It often shows up when you're leveling up. I've learned to quiet it enough to keep serving my clients and family. Here's what works for me:

  1. Name It
When doubt hits, I say (out loud or in my head): "That's self-doubt again." I jot the thought down, then add one counter-fact. Naming it shrinks its power. If it can be done, I will figure it out.

  2. Talk to Myself Like a Friend
I'm tougher on myself than anyone else. So I flip it: What would I tell a buddy in my shoes? "You've handled worse—you're reliable and honest." Now I say it to myself. Try a quick morning mirror talk: "Something fabulous is going to happen today."

  3. Gather Proof
Doubt loves vague claims. I counter with evidence: late-night flood fixes that left families grateful, loyal repeat clients, building this business from nothing. Every completed job proves I'm more capable than the voice says.

  4. Quit Comparing
Seeing big crews online used to drag me down. Now I limit it and focus on my edge: local, on-time, clear communication, treating every job right. Track your own wins, not theirs.

  5. Act Anyway
Best fix? Do it scared. Count 5-4-3-2-1 and send the quote, make the call, post the photo. Action builds confidence faster than thinking ever will.

  6. Lean on Support
I talk to other contractors, family, or clients when it's rough. "I've been there" from someone who gets it helps a ton.

Self-doubt isn't gone for good—it's part of running a real business. But it's quieter now. I still feel nerves before big jobs, but I don't let it stop me from showing up for the people who count on me. If doubt's hitting you—about work, business, or anything—remember: You've beaten tougher days already. Take one small step today. You've got this.
